Regional Competition: Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Smith Elementary 7:30 am - 2:30 pm

THE AFTER SCHOOL SCHEDULE IS POSTED!
Welcome to Science Olympiad, a fun and educational elective that allows students to learn science and compete with other schools in the county.  More specific information about this extraordinary competition can be found at www.sciencenc.com. If you are not able to attend the regional competition or are not able to fulfill the commitment of Science Olympiad, let me know no later than January 13th so I can go to the next person on the waiting list.  Thank you for ensuring dedication to this elective.

The elective is held the third nine weeks during 7th period with additional after school practices.  There will also be homework assigned during the elective.  It is a great amount of work, but extremely exciting! Students selected for the elective completed an interest survey and were assigned at least two events for the competition.  Even though the regional competition is not until Saturday, April 12th, we will begin working on our events asap.  The practices prior to the elective time will be during lunch and after school.  Students will also be gathering information and studying their event category at home as well.  Before scheduling any after school practices, I will use the surveys sent home to try to accommodate everyone's schedules.

HOMEWORK:
Students have already received a sheet detailing specific information about their first research event. The COMPLETED binder for this event is due on the first day of elective, which is Monday, January 13.  Mrs. Wiggins and I will be checking binders and meeting with teams throughout the first week. Please read the handout thoroughly as we are very strict graders.  Thanks!

Hunter Science Olympiad Team--1st place champions at the Wake County Smith Tournament, 2010-2011 (varsity), 2011-2012 (varsity), and 2012-2013 (varsity and junior varsity) school years!  Way to go, scientists! Let's go fo 2013-2014, too! :-)

After School Practice Schedule

Here is the after school practice schedule--mark your calendar!  Click "fullscreen" to view the entire schedule. Practice will be directly after school at 3:45 p.m. and end promptly at 5:15 p.m. Please be on time picking up your child from practice.  You may pick your child up from my classroom (210) or from the front carpool loop.  If you would like to stay to help with a practice, just let me know.  :-)

Also mark your calendar for April 12th from 7:30 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. for our COMPETITION DAY! Woohoo! More information and directions will be coming (once I receive this information).

We have a varsity AND a junior varsity team with 18 events each...so that is a total of 36 events to meet with after school.  I tried my best to work around your schedule as well.  Some students will be working on two events on the same day.  This means that the student will divide his/her time between the two events.

AT HOME: Please review and quiz your child nightly at home.  If you look at your child's notebooks, you will see the event rules on the first page.  The a,b,c,d, etc. listing provides information on what your child needs to know for the event.  It is better to know more than not enough.

GRADING: During after school sessions, students will be completing mock events for a grade.  Students should be studying their notebooks for all three events.  These mock events will be very challenging and I am a strict grader!

Practice schedule coming soon.  I am still waiting for some availability forms to be turned in to me.
